Dr. Carl Hart

Dr. Carl Hart is a groundbreaking neuroscientist who grew up in one of Miami's toughest neighborhoods. Not realizing the value of education as a youth, he only studied enough to keep himself on the basketball team; spending the rest of his time immersed in street life.

Dr. Hart is now Columbia University's first tenured African American professor in the sciences, and is an Associate Professor of Psychology in both the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology. He is also Director of the Residential Studies and Methamphetamine Research Laboratories at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. A major focus of his research is to understand complex interactions between drugs of abuse and the neurobiology and environmental factors that mediate human behavior and physiology.

Dr. Carl Hart has been the author or co-author of dozens of peer-reviewed scientific articles in the area of neuropsychopharmacology, he's also a member of a NIH review group. Dr. Hart is  also the co-author of the textbook, Drugs, Society, and Human Behavior.

Dr. Hart's most recent authoring is a book titled "High Price: A Neuroscientist's Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society". It's a provocative and eye-opening memoir that has him recalling his journey of self-discovery.  Dr. Hart also examines the relationship between choice, motivation, pleasure, and drugs, both in the brain and in society. It's a powerful story of both hope and change of a scientist who has dedicated his life to helping others.
